The Kawasaki Aircraft Company was founded in the 1920s. Their first venture into motorcycles was in the late 1940s when they started using their engine expertise to make motorcycle engines. In 1954 they produced their first complete motorcycle under the name Meihatsu, a subsidiary of Kawasaki. And In 1963 they were fully merged , witch produced the first KAWASAKI called K 1. |
In 1909 long before Suzuki dirt bikes came about, Michio Suzuki was making high quality weaving looms for the Japanese silk industry. After the end of the war in 1945, Suzuki produced its first bicycle/motorbike hyrid called the 'Power Free' in 1951, a 36cc two stroke powered bike with pedals and a two speed transmission. The 'Power Free' was designed as an inexpensive form of transport for the Japanese people. |
In 1962, American Honda produced the 49cc OHV 4-stroke CT100 Trail 50, featuring a 3-speed, automatic clutch and a step-through, pressed-steel frame. Its popularity and reliability found it being used by campers to follow the trails to their favorite fishing spot with ease. The Trail series bikes were produced until 1979. Honda's 1968 Z50 Mini-Trail and 1974 MR 50 Elsinore are still favorites among collectors. |
The tradition of Yamaha dirt bikes began way back in 1851 with the birth of Torakusu Yamaha, who then founded the Nippon Gakki Company in 1888. Yamaha motorcycles were nowhere on the agenda. The company produced musical instruments until the end of world war two. The first of the Yamaha dirt bikes was the legendary DT1. This 250cc two stroke was Yamaha's first purpose built dirt bike. The bike made a huge impact on the North American off road bike scene. |
KTM began as a dirty ol' metalworking/repair shop in 1934, started by an engineer named Hans Trunkenpolz. Over the next few years they became one of the largest motorbike and car repair workshops in Upper Austria. It was 1951 when KTM began developing its first motorcycle - the R-100. It was considered an engineering success and created quite a stir in the motorcycle industry. With this new-found confidence in themselves as a motorcycle producer, they built a dedicated manufacturing plant in Mattighofen and officially founded KTM - which stands for "Kronreif, Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen" - the two founders names and the place where it all began. |
